On Setting Goals

1 minute

Goals have always been difficult for me. I’m not sure if it’s the idea of separation from the present or just the word itself.

Recently I turned 36 and still I have to rewrite the word ‘goal’ in my mind. Goals to me are decisions.

I want a new car.

I’ve decided to have a new car.

I want a new car before January 10th.

To me, the best version of these statements is, I’ve decided to have a new car. Once I’ve decided to have something or do something I can step into the decision and feel the outcome. Drawing into the experience. It works so well most of my new realities don’t feel new reality catches up. I’ve already been feeling them.

Following the car example, that makes me smile, I once created a Cadillac Deville this way. I was driving a beat up brown Honda Accord. So embarrassed by it I would park it around-the-corner when going to business meetings. But every time I got into the car I painted a picture of the comfortable Cadillac interior and feel. A few months later when I got the Cadillac I have to say it was a bit lack luster. I’d already been driving the car.

Goals are funny.

I prefer decisions mixed with some action to create the picture of whatever I am creating. This reminds me of a dear friend. Three years ago his life fell in and he filed for bankruptcy.

I saw him a few months ago at his office. He makes north of a million dollars a year now and he confirmed this method and his life as proof.

It works on every topic. I’ve used it for sex, I’ve used it for creating ‘the one’, for cars, for experiences, for God, and for money.
